Hangzhou School Sports League Founded

This year, Wycombe Abbey are proud to announce that we have a number of sports teams taking part in the new Hangzhou School Sports League (HSSL). Wycombe Abbey helped form this league in order to have our students play regular sport fixtures against similar schools in Hangzhou. The ethos of the league is to encourage participation and to give students the chance to compete in a range of sports. Friendly matches will be played home and away over the next few months, ending with all the schools competing in a Finals Tournament. Wycombe Abbey have the honor of hosting the basketball finals, which will be held at the beginning of the new year.

September saw the start of the HSSL and Wycombe Abbey had both our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams competing. The girls’ team visited Huili School and the boys played a home fixture against Wahaha Bilingual School.

Girls U14

Here at Wycombe Abbey, we believe sport is an important part of a students life, regardless of if you are a boy or a girl. As such, Wycombe Abbey are only one of two teams who were able to field a girls basketball team in the league.

The girls’ team, many of them playing in their first ever basketball match, had a very entertaining game against a strong Huili team. The match started of very close and towards the end of the first half there was only one score between the teams. The girls battled strongly throughout with especially good defense but unfortunately Huili were a little bit more clinical with their shooting and won the game 16-4.

Boys U14

The boys’ basketball team also played their very first basketball match this academic year against Wahaha Bilingual School. Although we started of a little slowly against the physically imposing opposition, our team dug deep and showed great resilience, strength, and a lot of skill to storm back in the last two quarters to triumph 36 – 29.

The boys league looks like it will be very competitive with a total of 7 teams taking part. Wycombe Abbey is looking forward to pitting ourselves against the rest of the league in the coming months and is especially looking forward to hosting the Finals Tournament, where all the teams will come together to see who will be crowned the champions.
