Combining moral education with the development of students' willpower, pursuing both knowledge and virtue. The Chinese name for Wycombe Abbey 'Wei Ya' brings together the notions of "Wei" and "Ya", power and elegance. 'Wei' means great power and reflects the hope that our pupils will develop both great ambition and willpower as well as the courage to face future challenges, so that they can fully explore their individual potential in pursuit of excellence; "Ya" means the elegance exhibited by "learned and virtuous scholars" in ancient Chinese literature. We expect our pupils to become well-rounded individuals with great learning and good conduct. We also hope they will take on the responsibility of changing the world for the better and benefiting the whole of society while pursuing their own personal goals.

In short, the full significance of Wycombe Abbey's Chinese name "Weiya" is closely aligned with Confucius' belief that "a noble person should not just be a tool used by other people". We aim to help and encourage our pupils to become high-minded individuals who are not satisfied with just mastering a single skill or blindly seeking material gain, but rather people who pay equal attention to knowledge and action, who are open-minded and inclusive and determined life-long learners. We believe that it is only pupils who have strong personal integrity, who learn about the world from a global perspective and who care about the lives of others who will be able to shoulder the responsibilities of self-improvement, raising a family successfully and contributing to national development, and who will thereby help to make the world a better place.
